Life of an Ant 10/27/10
The life of an ant is a depressing one. You spend your entire life serving a queen you may never see, who couldn't tell you apart from anyone of the other thousand other ants who were bringing her food and gifts. Your life means nothing to any of the individuals around you. When you find food you aren't praised, it's your job. When you protect the hill from intruders you don't get a ceremony, it's your job. When you build the most amazing tunnel the colony has ever seen you don't get a special place by the queen, it's your job. You go unnoticed by the rest of the community around you, they see you as just another hand to help with the labor. You are replaceable, hundreds of replacements are born each day. If you are killed defending the hill, or by an evil middle schooler who just discovered the joys of convex lenses, no one will notice, no one keeps tabs on you, the colony will soldier on. I am tired of being an ant.
